THOMAS BOSTON
Thomas Boston was born in Duns, Scotland in 1676. His life is a living testament to the forgotten truth, it's not where a Christian serves, but the quality of the service he renders that counts. Though spending only one session at the Edinburgh Theological University, through arduous self-discipline and meager resources, he became one of Scotland's premiere Hebrew scholars. He became renowned as one of Scotland's great divines. His first pastorate was in a small village called Simprin. After serving there for around 8 years, he was asked to take the pastorate of another small parish called, Ettrick. During our holiday several years back, Jeanie and I spent a whole day researching this place. Trust me, this one was WAY off the beaten path. His church still stands, and his memorial stands nearby in the churchyard cemetery. (Jeanie just loved this trip!)

There are many works still available by Thomas Boston. Many years ago, I read one of the greatest pastoral autobiographies ever written. It is called, "The Memoirs of Thomas Boston". One of his greatest contributions to Christian literature is his classic work, "Human Nature In It's Fourfold State". In this work, he expounds upon doctrine of man found:

1) In the state of innocence.
2) In the state of nature.
3) In the state of grace.
4) In the state of eternity.

I know I say this all the time, but in terms of depth of understanding, this work is incomparable. I have never read anything close to it.
