Converting a Nation of Agnostics
THE Scottish Bible Society was founded in 1809 to provide Bibles to missionaries to distribute in Africa and Asia.   Three years ago, the society launched a new strategy after concern that Scotland was becoming a nation of agnostics - and that the most important mission was on home soil, not abroad.

The Rev Douglas Campbell, executive director of the society, said: "The paradox we live with is that in Scotland there are plenty of Bibles, but no-one is reading them, whereas across the developing world, there is often a scarcity of Bibles and people are desperate to read the scriptures.   Mr Campbell said the campaign was all the more poignant because of the historical importance of Scotland in taking the scriptures around the world.   "It is very sad that today we find Scotland has lost much of that historic link with the scriptures," he said.
